Force of Nurture
Pillar 3

Deepening Our Sense of Belonging

About this Pillar

Students thrive in communities where they feel welcome—which is exactly why equipping faculty and staff with skills to address diverse student needs is a crucial part of our plan.

The Aspiration

We will ensure that Govs is a diverse, welcoming, and affordable community.

An equitable and culturally responsive learning environment promotes a sense of belonging and academic success.

Action 1

Represent a variety of voices in our curriculum.

We will conduct an academic curriculum audit to ensure diverse voices and perspectives are represented across all levels and all disciplines.

Action 2

Invest in growing a vibrant and diverse community.

We will increase the enrollment of students from underrepresented backgrounds through increased financial aid, specific outreach, and more.

Action 3

Provide every student with equal access.

We will provide financial support that meets the needs of our students through financial aid and the Access Fund, which provides all students with a Governor’s experience.

Action 4

Develop a strategic plan for community and belonging.

We will equip faculty and staff with the knowledge and skills to address diverse student needs—creating a more equitable learning experience for all.

The Aspiration

We will help every student feel a sense of belonging on campus.

Excellence happens when students feel safe, comfortable, and like they belong in their community.

Action 1

Build and renovate community spaces.

Building new or renovating existing dormitories creates residential spaces and neighborhoods that foster connection among dormitory residents and both boarding and day students.

Action 2

Create a residential life curriculum.

Developing and implementing a comprehensive residential life curriculum will emphasize wellness, belonging, and community-building among boarding and day students alike.

Action 3

Implement all-gender housing options.

We will provide support and education around all-gender housing to ensure a smooth transition and understanding among students, faculty, and staff.

– Gracie Augustine ’25 | Academy President

Govs has really taught me how to understand myself better, communicate with others, hear other perspectives, and really open up spaces to listen.

The Aspiration

We will broaden our definition of “community.”

Exposure to different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences can stimulate critical thinking, foster empathy, and challenge assumptions.

Action 1

Extend our community service opportunities.

We will create robust and regular community service opportunities that reinforce the importance of service to others, build community, and help students develop empathy, leadership, and responsibility.

Action 2

Integrate service learning into our curriculum.

Students will find a cause or organization that aligns with issues that inspire them, and they will work towards their community service graduation requirement in ways that they believe are truly meaningful.

Action 3

Maximize the impact of the GovsPLUS program.

We will maximize the effectiveness of the GovsPLUS program (our summer enrichment program for talented middle school students from Lawrence, Massachusetts) and its connection to the Govs campus community.
